...The World University Games at Lake Placid in winter 2023 will have Ski-O?

Is that confirmed now? Last I heard (not recently) it was proposed but not certain. Day 2 of this year's Empire State Games ski-O, Feb 1-2, is supposed to be at the same venue, if anyone wants an early preview. Though they are planning to add more trails between now and 2023.

Have they embargoed it already though? Woc 2022 was embargoed over 3 years ahead of time!

The competition programme includes 8 compulsory sports* and up to 3 optional sports at a Winter Universiade. The compulsory sports are:
Alpine Skiing
Biathlon
Cross Country Skiing
Curling
Figure Skating
Ice Hockey
Short Track Speed Skating
Snowboard

Last I had heard ski-O is one of the 3 optional sports. And if it gets included 3 times in a row it then moves from optional to compulsory for the future. Lake Placid is a big deal because ski-O was included in 2019 and is on the program for 2021, so if included in LP that would make 3 in a row. But I still haven't heard anywhere that it's made the program for 2023. Only that they already had a venue chosen at Paul Smith's VIC. Oddly though, talking to any of the usual suspects I haven't found anyone in the O community who is actually involved yet.

David F and Janet F have been the local contacts. There has been a lot of discussion going on about it over the past year.
I'm not convinced that it is possible to do it at Paul Smiths at any kind of quality level with the resources available, and even more so that I can't see it being a good idea for the US community to devote the amount of resources required to it. There are a lot of other projects we could accomplish with our time without burning out everyone that would be beneficial for the US community rather than for the international athletes.

Ooh, that does sound fun! However, if all things go as planned (fingers crossed!), I’m looking at a 2022 graduation, so I don’t think I’d be eligible.

Apparently you could still be eligible. The FISU rules say you have to be in school or have received your degree in the previous calendar year.
Ed, I agree with the concerns you mention. I first became aware of it from reading an article in the Adirondack Explorer last spring that said Paul Smith's was looking to improve their ski trails to host the 2023 ski-O races, as well as to make them better for the local ski team to practice and host races on. After reading that I spoke to David and a few others about it and it seemed like more was unknown than known at that point.
Curiously, from a quick glance through the FISU general rules,

it appears that the list of which optional sports the organizers want to include is supposed to be included in the bid process, which is then approved with the bid. So from that I would think that at this point it should be "known" if ski-O is on the program. Of course connecting the dots from "on the program" to a working plan of who is doing all the work to put it on is another matter, but sometimes that seems to be how high level exec types think. Make a deal first and then find someone to make good on whatever it was that you promised.

Not sure where Kevin Brooker (GMOC, Aloha Foundation) drummed the details of ski-o's inclusion up, but he has some big ideas about support training at AF's camps in Vermont if it happens.

IOF are pushing the inclusion of ski orienteering in the winter Universiade hard (to the point that they apparently contributed some funds to the 2021 one), so I would expect they would be strongly supportive of this happening.
