Very handy. We have had a couple of blackouts already this year

Indeed, although this one will probably be used more for cricket-related purposes.

The quality of battery powered radios has changed over the past decade or so. They are very good on FM detection, but almost useless for AM. Trouble is, AM is the signal that travels the furthest. As a bushwalking user, a quality FM receiver is almost useless. I suspect the days of ferrite rods inside the box are long gone.

This one seems pretty good (better than any I've had previously) at the task of picking up ABC Melbourne inside an office building.

I miss the days of using a shortwave radio to try to pick up BBC World Service or Radio Australia from the remoter corners of Europe - occasionally you'd get a really clear signal which is how we came to be listening to the last quarter of Essendon-Richmond from a hillside in Hungary before the World Uni Champs relay (something which would be unremarkable now but was something unusual in 1996).
