Discussion: jersey design opinions and voting

Pink Socks:
I haven't seen much of anything happen over the last week, so I thought I would consolidate all of the opinions people have had over this process so far (from AP or Spike's blog).

Mary says:
preferred option: Jim Ryun throwback
likes: having "Orienteer Kansas" spelled out
suggestion: maybe different color for check, pink trim
no: status quo

Mook says:
preferred options: pink check, status quo
likes: black in color scheme

Peggy says:
preferred option: Jim Ryun throwback
preferred check color: pink

Spike says:
no opinion expressed

Gene says:
preferred option: pink check
likes: a lot of pink, a popping design
no: misuse of pink (ie: wrong shade, only on edging)

Patrick says:
preferred options: 1) pink check, 2) powder check, 3) Jim Ryun throwback
likes: checkerboard, use of pink
no: status quo, checks other than pink/white or powder/white

Others say: ?

------------

Maybe we can try voting in steps:

1) Choose the basic design:
-- a) Color scheme
-- b) Front/back panel pattern (ie: solid, checkered, other)
-- c) Sleeve panels (ie: royal/royal/royal or royal/pink/royal)
-- d) Side panels (ie: royal/black/royal/ or royal/royal/royal)
-- e) Ringers (ie: all black, all pink, neck black & arms white)
(several images have been posted here)

2) Choose a logo + "orienteer kansas" design for the back
(I have two options for a solid-colored back panel and five options for a checkerboard back panel)

3) Choose a design for the sleeves
(I have several ideas, depending how steps 1 and 2 go. For example, if we choose the logo only for the back design, we'll have "orienteer kansas" printed on the sleeve)

------------

Keep in mind: the only panels that we have unlimited control over (color, style, pattern, etc) are the front, back, center sleeve panels, and ringers). For all side panels, and front/back sleeve panels, the only color options that make sense for OK are royal, black, and white.

Just a quick note...I'm pretty consistent with Patrick's preferences - pink check then powder check. I'm not a big fan of the Ryun throwback.

Patrick - I think you should just listen to what everyone says, but make the decision yourself.

Email from Fritz:
preferred options: Jim Ryun throwback, pink check
suggestions:
-- pink side panels [Which we can't do, unless we opt against the tougher and meshier fabrics-- Patrick]
-- serifed K
-- horizontal stripes instead of check
-- pink/powder blue check
-- use of other logos (baseplate compass?)
-- limit or remove black from color scheme
-- move "orienteer kansas" above logo on back

If we still want to vote, perhaps the easiest thing would be to come up
with a few designs, then vote on those. Perhaps pick one throwback and one checkered design (perhaps those that Patrick likes best?) that seem like they represent some of the opinions given above, and tally votes on them. The logos may fall into place once we settle on the basics of a design.

My two favorite checkered color combos, in three varieties of back design. I have a few other options, too, which I'll post later, I guess. Two of the additional options have the large logo, with the words directly underneath, one option with one row of words (smaller font), the other with two (larger font). Other options would not have the large logo, but the larger font on a dark background, such as an outline to the state of kansas. The tiling might look a little funny, but I'll play with it.

Oh yeah baby! I like the things Mary pointed out a lot. Isolating the pink areas on the "ringers" seems so fine. The bluecheck-word (4th from the top in your images) is quite a nice one. The clubname on the back gives a little nod to the "throwback" jersey and may be just enough to appease some of the traditionalists.

We'll have to think about ordering procedures soon I hope. Did you have some thoughts on that Patrick? Perhaps start a separate discussion for it.

I've decided in the past day or so that I'm going with the name on the back of the jersey. However, even with the pink words over the blue check, or the blue words over the pink check, the contrast still isn't that sharp.

My solution is to put that same text on a solid-color panel, over the checkers. The solid-color panel will be in the shape of the state of Kansas.

When do we get to see a picture of the final design?

Sorry about this taking so long... I've had these around for awhile, I just forgot to post them.

I've decided to go with the new Kansas outline design for the back. It's a good idea to have the club name large on the back (instead of the giant logo). Also, with the powder blue Kansas, this does several things:

a) makes the words significantly more legible on a solid background
b) references the pink letters on powder blue, just like the jim ryun throwback
c) includes a map, and gives a slight nod to an older OK logo that included the outline of Kansas on it

Also, this logo will go on the sides of each sleeve, but I couldn't sketch it very well in the mock-up.

I know I said earlier that I didn't want to add another color, but after thinking about it, it's just another shade of one of our other colors, plus black and white are neutral colors, anyway.

Speaking of black, after a lot of thought, I'm going with the black on the sides, as it'll bring the entire ensemble together better with the black pants.

The final design looks good! Is this design in the form that will allow Axis Gear to print out shirts?

It looks like this is a good time to sort out prices and sizing and to get a list of probable orders put together. Do you want to do that, Patrick, or want someone else to do it? I could probably do it if you didn't want to.

Not 100%, but close. The above sketch is pretty much that, just a sketch. However, I have a vector format of the fabric templates, and the square logo is in vector format, and the Kansas logo is in vector format, and checkerboard design is in vector format.

Basically, all I need to do is put everything down in layers.

It looks like this is a good time to sort out prices and sizing and to get a list of probable orders put together.

I think we've got pricing and size quotes in some of the earlier emails we bounced around with AxisGear. If I remember right, it was around $70 per + a one time $90 setup fee or something.

I've been in contact with AxisGear, but I don't know who has the best access with all of our club members everywhere. The only OK'ers I know are the ones on AP, Peter, my dad, and Fritz. You might be better at collecting orders.

I would likely be getting 3: two for me (size med), and one for my dad (size large).

Can we get an order placed and delivered before the relays? I want one small shirt.
Feb 28, 2008 4:55 PM #
Pink Socks:
Ordered: yes

Delivered: I talked to AxisGear today, and we're cutting it close, so we'll need to configure our orders ASAP. The artwork is done. If we need to rush the process, I'll pay for it, since it's my fault that this got delayed 6 weeks.

If we get 12+ ordered, that gives us a price break.

I suggest making a little webpage that shows: your sketch, the info on how to select correct sizes, a cost estimate, an order deadline, and contact info so that someone can submit their order. Then only if we could convince Spike to send out an emergency O'Read pointing to the site...
