I know there has been a very long thread about this previously - but I'll add a little more.
rockman started orienteering in 1987, 2 sons over the next year or two. I played the "role" of jumper minder, walk to start/wait at the finish/be the driver for another 8 years. Started out tentatively but never considered to assign the title of orienteer upon myself until driving home after some Aus Carnival and commented.. "That'd be an interesting map".

I was already well and truly in that mode by my teens. One area I regularly made such remarks about, passed on our annual 1980s trips to the Gold Coast, is finally making its orienteering debut soon; I understand it's the day 1 area for Easter 2020.
