We're sad to report the death of Jack Dyess of Dallas, TX, who served as USOF's second president, elected in 1973. His daughter, Jackie, sent us information and asked us to pass it along to the U.S. orienteering community.

We wish his family our full condolences.

What a character! For a couple of years when he was at Ohio University Jack organized an event called the Appalachian Spring Orienteering Festival, "Run Your ASOF".
On the first day of one event a control disappeared, So before the start of the next day he assembled everyone and presented a state trooper up on the stage. "This is Trooper xxx of the State Police. I want you to know," Jack announced "that I have just donated all the control flags to the State of Ohio. Anyone caught tampering with a control will be tampering with state property and will have to deal with Trooper xxx." There were no problems with controls on the second day.

I'd be very surprised if it was an orienteer who stole the flag.

More likely it was an Australian who stole the flag.
