Did this one in reverse as a walk - and thought the couple of kilometres on the north side of the steepest climb (and the area stretching to the northeast across the plateau) would be a seriously awesome orienteering area.
Based on the bits I saw I think you are right. It would be a pretty physical area though.
There must be some awesome areas for orienteering and rogaining in Patagonia if you know where to look.
Not orienteering terrain, but the steppe from El Calafate to El Chalten reminded me of Kazakhstan a lot. The roads are a fair bit better though.
The similarity extends to roads once you're north of El Chalten (or at least it did in 2014, although it may be different now).
