Discussion: Sprint distance

My GPS track shows a straight line connecting where I went in the cave to where I came out of the cave. But, the total distance for the session on my watch is 3.1 km (which seems about right). When I look at the little pace and HR graph, it shows the pace and cadence changing throughout my time underground. I wonder if AP/Garmin is doing something to estimate the pace when the GPS track is gone. Here's the track in AP:
