Had good results for occasional back issues from a local chiropractor who treat lots of runners and other athletes. Usually just one or two sessions and doing the exercises he gives to do takes care of the problem.

Could also try a good physical trainer. I've had success with a guy trained in physiology, who identified my hip/glute problem being due to a stiff ankle (!?). Rolling and stretching has made the issue go away.

Last time I had my back looked at, scan showed arthritis in the spine in the place where the nerves go to service the lower back. Had a cortisone shot, felt good for 2-3 months and after that would hurt a little but not much. That was maybe 2 or 3 years ago. Now it's a little worse, but not drastically so. And none of the tight muscles that can make it hard/painful to rotate or bend the spine.

So we'll see. Not sure what to do, but not in any hurry. And figuring out some sort of rehab so I can venture back into running is certainly not on the agenda. All that was in a previous life. :-)

I’m afraid we all have some spine arthritis. The body is complicated and particularly the back. I have found some things that make my back work better and some things that make it worse, but have not yet found an answer. Stretching, rolling and strengthening are all good, and if I keep at it things are usually much better than if I don’t.

But I thought the really absolutely best thing for your back is a bunch of long bus rides, preferably in Italy. Always seems to work.

That seems ok, and I am better than when I left. I think the daily sprint races are restorative. And daily applications of pasta seem to really do me a lot of good.
