They will have to fight hard to stay atop of this. Nebraska is out there just beyond the breaking surf, circling like some hungry Great White Shark, thinking "if we can't win, then we might as well lose." Chomp, chomp.

Speaking of UCONN...there's a nice KU connection. The KU athletic director from 2003-2010 was athletic director at UCONN from 1990-2003. Lew Perkins was the guy. He hired Mark Mangino who seemed to be a good coach and a terrible person.

Perkins was at the helm during the KU ticket scandal and seemed to have some issues himself. See wikipedia for more details:

You'd think a $2mm salary plus bonuses would be enough...

UConn has worked to achieve this position, don’t know why they should be denied. The current occupant, one Randy Edsall was there coach, say, a decade ago. Presided over some 5-6 seasons, maybe a 6-5 once, and they would often get invited to some 4th tier bowl game against a school you never heard of. He jumped ship one year, as I recall, right before the ball game and the players found out from someone else, as he trundled off to big bucks and his “dream job” at the U of Maryland. He then presided over a decline of Terp fortunes for several years until getting canned. Meanwhile, his assistant, one Pasqualoni, took over for a year or two. Not inspiring, not particularly successful, but seemed like an ok guy. They moved on, rather disastrously to a guy named Bob Diaco, very rah-rah, but completely a blowhard and full of baloney. They got worse, until finally someone noticed that Diaco was delusional and full of shit. So they had a big search and found . . . Edsall? Really? So now he’s in his 3rd year of his second round and UConn seems to be right where they belong. His 2 most distinguishing features so far include hiring his son as an assistant and conning some state legislator into introducing a bill to carve out an exception to state anti-nepotism rules, and now more recently to whining about what a great coach he is, but his players are no good because of the prior coaches. I hope they never win another game.

It sounds like UTEP better be really concerned, even though UTEP hasn't won a game yet, and UConn has.

And you'd think UConn would know better than to do a re-hire like this, just off the name alone (okay, so the spelling isn't *exactly* the same, but close enough.)

Based on your description alone, Charlie, UConn is a team we can all root for!
