Maybe try doing it off feel instead of looking at your heart rate and see if there’s any difference? Or try doing a session with Steve or Mycroft to help drag you through until you get confident again.

Maybe - the main point i wanted to get peoples thoughts on were about how much effort to put in (maybe I wasn't clear in my question).

I can just not be weak and smash out tempos every week at good pace (I can make myself do that but I will be killing myself to keep a high pace so so long) but tempos shouldn't been so hard they feel like a race right? Won't this just lead to over training and illness which happened to me over the summer?

So the main question is: What should you do if you find tempos so hard? I mean I can go slower - but 3:50min/km is that really a tempo? Or do you just stop being pathetic and weak and just run faster even though it is incredibly hard and feels like a race every time?

Other people may have different thoughts or opinions or advice

I think Sheffield is a difficult place to train off of pace. Even on the LoL it's rolling and a bit stop start so what Daneo mentions about training from effort is a good way to approach it, especially as you build confidence and get used to pushing yourself a bit more. Training with others would also be good and when you do that, I'd say leave your own watch at home and just let them dictate the pace, that way you aren't constantly fretting and clock-watching, you can just get on with it.

From your other comments you seem to be saying you have no energy despite sleep etc? Maybe try eating more, especially as you're increasing your training load from virtually nothing to more reasonable training, as basic as it is, staying hydrated will also make a big difference.

Tempo should just be sustained effort so go for what is comfortably hard, regardless of the pace for a few sessions and then gradually bring it down as you become more acclimatised to it. Perhaps at some point there will be an element of just manning up and cracking on but I'd advise not just building up the mileage, but gradually increasing the speed rather than trying to jump back in on where you were before. You had a pretty big lay off so it's only natural that it'll suck for a bit before it gets better.
