Anybody planning on camping for the Rocky Mountain O Fest? We'll be looking to camp Fri-Sun nights. Any tips, any good locations for people who have camped in the past? Would love to join a group if other orienteers are camping. Thanks.
There is free camping throughout the national forest (outside of designated campgrounds and day-use areas). If you want to sleep at night, look for a spot that isn't near a large concentration of pickup trucks or RV's with bunches of ATVs on trailers. Bugling elk may still wake you, but that is much more pleasant than drunks blasting weird music or roaring around on ATVs. The actual campgrounds like Yellow Pine will probably fill up a day or two before the weekend, certainly by mid-day on Friday if not sooner. Free dispersed camping in the forest is much more pleasant - if you are cool with just making daily trips to the rest area for toilet facilities and potable water.
