I'm not certain, but it might be that a gas leak into open air isn't particularly dangerous. Unlike when it's leaking into a confined space like a basement. It takes very little of the odor stuff (ethyl mercaptan) that they add to gas to make it seem like a lot.

That could be the case... It was really spewing out when I ran by. Later, people a half mile away reported smelling it! It happened at ~2:15 pm; as of 8:15 pm, the road was still closed and they were still working on it.

The more time goes on the more I'm convinced running in my neighborhood is far more risky than running out in the rugged, wild terrain and this is yet another example!

I had a gas pipeline blow up in my backyard once and it left a crater the size of a house in its place... along a trail I frequented on runs through the woods. Always been scared of gas lines since. This doesn't help! :)

Yikes! Luckily there was no explosion or crater at this leak location...
