Why do they both look the same?

They each captured the same half

So the same half twice makes a hole?

Two halves never make a hole.

I sent Ken the GPX file, but he seems to have loaded the wrong one. The map for the first half on my log (which goes through 19 hours) is blank when I try to view it on AP using Safari, but it shows up on AP using Firefox (and on Garmin Connect using Safari). Maybe Ken Jr has some insight into why that might be? Never happened before.

I see what is causing that problem, and can fix it. Basically, 19 hours worth of 1-second samples is too many for some particular operations in Safari.
