I have some lidar in gml format. Anyone know how to convert that into something that OCAD or QGIS can handle?

It appears Global Mapper will open GML. The only free tool, at least according to GRIME http://www.grime.net/gistools/g.htm is Virtual Terrain Project http://vterrain.org/

Thanks Bryan - I'll try that.

The data is a publicly available 5m grid DEM in Japan. On the download site they recommend some free software from which I was able to get hillshadings in GeoTIFF and from that I can generate contours in QGIS. Also managed to generate contours in vterrain but had trouble exporting them - something to do with projections I think.

Being 5m grid they are not great but a whole lot better than the non-lidar base maps which are currently my only option in most areas.

While I was doing all this I got an email from Gian-Reto at OCAD asking if I could give him some of the data so he can add GML functionality to OCAD. He has shown me an initial output of 1m contours - says he will be finished with this project by early next week.

Pretty good service - you might even think service like that is worth paying an annual fee for.

GML import is already in the latest version of OCAD 2018.

However, note the restriction per
the wiki

namely;
"Import GML FilesSpace.PNGThis function is available in OCAD Mapping Solution.
Choose this function to import Normbasierte Austauschschnittstelle (NAS) data.
OCAD cannot import other GML files. "

Gian-Reto just finished developing the ability to process the gml data I gave him and will include it in the next update next week
