It being too wet to practice fiddle in the bush at lunchtime, I instead listened to Kevin's Press Club speech. I have to say it was impressive. The main theme was that we have experienced a once in a lifetime economic boom, but as a nation we have squandered the opportunity to invest. But in the back of my mind was a voice saying.... so why wasn't this the basis of electioneering from the start. Especially before the me-too tax policy. I suspect we will look back on this as the election that couldn't really be lost, and the opportunity this provided. Maybe, even though we lose Howard, we still have his legacy. Neither of them are economic conservatives. Not that I would claim this as compliment.

I think that Labor has tried too hard to 'not lose' this election hence the me-too tax policy and generally conservative approach. Hopefully if and when they are elected the Press Club speech is a more accurate reflection of the attitude of the new government.
