I'm still pretty new to this but my understanding is, preferably not the end you put up to your eye!
We finally figured out the difference between the skiing events:
Biathlon is the one where you occasionally stop during the race and take off your poles.
Ski-O is the one where you occasionally stop during the race and take off your skis.
Cross-country is the one where you occasionally stop during the race and take off both your skis and poles, and then put on different ones.
Oh, I thought skiO was the one where you break the skis and the poles.
Yes, that's another ski-O ritual. And like other innovations, XC is copying that one as well. (See e.g. start of men's 30 km skiathlon.)
Also I hear that some ski-Oers are even skilled at breaking ski boots. But I believe that's an advanced technique that only an elite few have mastered.
