To help us celebrate, today is a great day to donate to Orienteering Canada's new Endowment Fund
- another way that we are celebrating Orienteering Canada's anniversary. Charitable donations of all amounts are gratefully welcomed. We are 50% of the way to our goal of raising 50k. And currently donations are being matched 1:1 from an anonymous donor!
It is strange how the smallest things can so greatly change the course of one's life. Too often it is horrible changes like a freak car accident, a stray bullet, falling off a ladder.
Sometimes the small thing leads to a change for the better. Such it was for me when in 1968 while visiting Montreal for Man and His World, the successor fair to Expo 67 I happened to see a newspaper article about an orienteering event where Pat Skene, recently inducted in to the Canadian Orienteering Hall of Fame was pictured running out of the woods at an event staged by her husband, Chris, also inducted. That looks interesting, I thought, and it was in Oka, just across the river from where I was staying. It would be neat to try that.
The next summer I got a chance to try something like that when I took an outdoor ed course for my teaching degree. Then a student of mine invited me to an event his dad, Al Gravelle, was going to be staging in the Gatineau Park. I went to it and then to the Ottawa Orienteering Club's founding meeting. After that I was really hooked in. In a short time I went from not knowing the word orienteering to having it rule my life.
I would not have had it any other way.
I'm sure pretty well everyone has similar stories.
Yes, I have donated to the endowment fund. Canadians think of what orienteering has done for you in the past and give a little back for the future.
Happy Birthday from Australia.
What a great story Gord. Thank you for giving a plug to the endowment fund. Between our campaign using CHIMP, and from people who have donated directly to Orienteering Canada we have raised $25,000.... half way to our 50k goal. We are using these donations to start an endowment fund for Orienteering Canada, to help us develop sustainable funding as we embark on our next 50 years.
