Nice to see you are back racing seriously.
Bearings being bad could be a symptom of looking down more than up, which is itself a symptom of lack of terrain racing. Or it could be a sign you aren't reading the map as fast as you used to, so you look at the map more and look where you are going less.
Can you do a bit of map-reading during your elliptical sessions? Think about what features you will look for and about from where you'll see them.
