That's what I do. I'm not very good at drawing curves, so I cheat by drawing straight lines and then converting them. I've gotten quite adept at knowing how to draw the straight lines so that I get the right result after I convert to curves.
(Admittedly, perhaps it's easier had I learned to draw curves through more practice. I hesitate to say that I'm a great drafter because I rely on convert to curves too much. The *result* of my drafting is excellent, just perhaps not all of my *processes*)
I'm rather happy with my ability to draw curves in OCAD. Then again, my forearm is usually sore for days after an extended cartography session.
I think drawing curves gives a slightly nicer line.
I really like the drawing tool in OOM and the ability to switch between straight lines and curves without changing the tool. Maybe the newer versions of OCAD allow that, but the old version I was familiar with didn't.
I use the convert to curves on some projects. If I'm importing contours from KP or using open street map data, then I'll use the convert to curves on some projects.

I don't disagree. However, with a lot of practice with placing straight line segments, you can get the resulting curve that you want.
