I've been really happy with the Princetontec headlamps - this one is really bright, although you can find ones without the battery packs for lower burn times.

I use the EOS model. Just 3 AAAs, so it's lightweight and easy to carry. It's definitely bright enough for trail running.

I agree about the Apex. Charlie has one that I've borrowed, and it really is a great light, at a pretty reasonable price.
