It can actually be good to make a big mistake like this before a big meet. It gives you time to think of strategies to cope and hopefully not get so far off. Your distance estimation was off here. You might have been looking at your map when you steamed by the turn. Always think about what could go wrong. Anyway, you won't be overconfident in Idaho, a good thing, I think.

The trail leading into 9 was very overgrown and easy to miss. Gail, you are correct, it does give me some time to think and plan. And I agree, my distance estimation was way off. I am still struggling with how to recover from mistakes; my brain goes into overdrive and I can't seem to get calm and rational again for quite a while. I have tried several recovery techniques, but remembering to use the technique is my main problem. I will be more cautious in Idaho so that I don't make a big mistake, to begin with!
