Looking at RG I haven't got a clue as to what was a viable route. Maybe it was more obvious on the ground but you need to make your mind up for the long leg into that area before leaving the previous control.

I'm not convinced this is fair and I'm not surprised that there were some large time differences. Local knowledge would certainly help so Phil really should have won ;-)

I'm quite happy to leave that form of 'orienteering' to you speedy types.

Yes, local knowledge would have helped a lot, and time spent studying the final details and using Google Street View to work out what you'd expect to see would also have been quite helpful. I didn't have either, and the map alone wasn't making enough sense to me.

I think it would have been fairer to have included a larger extract of the map by the flyovers, including an indication of how they were going to show the OOB roads (just as thick purple lines, without any hatching).

That said, some people managed to work it out quickly, so perhaps I just want thinking clearly enough.
