My orienteering shoes are falling apart and I need to replace them. I have been wearing New Balance MT1210, which are really trail shoes with sometimes marginal grip for off-trail running. But they come in 4E widths, and I really need wide shoes. Not just "they are spec'd as D but they feel side to me" shoes. Not 2E or W shoes. Like, I really need very wide shoes. Even most Nike 4E shoes are not wide enough for my feet. Brooks 4E works for running, but they offer none of their trail shoes in 4E. New Balance has seemed like my only option.
If I wanted to get real orienteering/adventure racing footwear with better grip, do I have any options? It doesn't look like Icebug or Inov8 will work, but are there other choices?
I've been looking for this the last 20 years to no avail. I wear Jalas Jukola with the insoles taken out, or inov8 Xtalons (and no insole) which have a soft enough upper to be comfortable, but don't work so well on wet rock or wood..
I have very wide for foot, and for me what works is VJ Falcons the wide model shoe from VJ. This is the widest Orienteering shoe on the market. If you can't fit into those, sorry you are out of luck.
Re: inv8s.... I can not fit into any of their shoes comfortably unless I get 2 sizes up. then I feel and look like a penguin or clown :( Now they have Standard Fit which is wider than the Precision fit, but that's not helping much.
Salomon have XA Pro 3D that have wide option and are very sturdy, but heavier.
I have quite wide feet, and have to get custom made, to the point that I'm learning to make them myself (to be seen how successfully, but so far so good). The downside is that the options for type of shoe are very limited. Heavy running shoe with deep tread is the closest I've found so far.
