IOF has set 5/24/2017 as the next
WOD. If anyone in the USA (or Canada) would like to join me in reaching out to clubs and providing support, let me know. The goal is for each club to do some school event on that day.
Update: Confirmed open internet/phone planning call will be held Monday 1/9/2017 9:30pm EST.
We had an event last year and may do it again this year. But we cannot do a school event since our school year ends in mid-May
Same here - our last student day is May 22. But perhaps we could use the school grounds for an event and promote it to students the week before.
One of the other area districts has an "enrichment day" near the end of the school year, with a variety of activities, but that's always on a Friday, and probably a week or two earlier. We expose a couple hundred students to O' on that day, but I'm sure they won't change their schedule to fit NOD. The last two years, we have printed on their maps a coupon for free admission to a regular O meet at a nearby park the following weekend, but exactly zero of the kids have shown up. I'm open to suggestions for how to get a better return rate. We only get 20 minutes with each class, so it's basically instant immersion - pass out maps and SI cards, a couple quick safety rules, and a very short score-O on the school grounds. Every kid gets a map, although they do the course in pairs. Not much time to do any real "selling" of upcoming events. But with the free coupon and the club website on every map, I would expect at least some response.
We also had a NOD event last year - late afternoon "sprints" in an urban park, but very light attendance, which was not helped by very high humidity and the threat of thunderstorms.
If anyone wants to join in 7 minutes, please join me at

Over the years, NOD has generally been flexible about recognizing events being held on different weekends, due to differing O-seasons around the country. Could IOF be flexible about WOD in recognition of differing school years around rhe world?
Regardless of the specific day chosen, WOD probably works better in the southern hemisphere, since it is closer to the beginning of school years there; whereas it is closer to -- or past -- the end in the north.
The main issue with WOD is keeping any official records for most starts in ONE day. My understanding is events on nearby days can use the promotional info and name, but their starts don't get reported or counted in the official statistics.
We'd like to identify a contact from each club for WOD. Please suggest people. While we're at it, it wouldn't hurt to mention that we probably want to identify a scouts contact and a JROTC contact for each club too...
Brian Coleman is listed as scouting coordinator for RMOC:

Thanks - Brian is also now the OUSA Chair for scouts.
I mentioned the date and event to Dartmouth College and there is a chance some orienteering function will happen on campus that day. Sounds like we won't know for sure until April.
Hey presto! Now this thread is open again. See my thread about
