In a perfect orienteering holiday world the annual West Point orienteering event would be the week before or the week after and some orienteering entrepreneur would step forward to offer a series of events mid-week -night-O, Score O, Street-O, O in Central Park, etc to attract hordes of orienteering tourists to the region that is so beautiful in the spring.
Any chance of that happening?

Camping will be available. Shower blocks may/may not be open depending on how long winter lasts.
Reservations can be made after Jan 1st.

Scheduling nearby major events on successive weekends can help those from afar. But locals may prefer major events spread across the calendar. A dilemma.

I think West Point is looking at April 22nd - they have to deconflict land usage with a couple of other annual West Point events that tend to be in the same area. May is generally too late - as with most universities, things get a bit nuts in the weeks leading up to graduation, plus you have all the prep for summer training as well.

If there's real interest in asking USMAOC to adjust dates, I recommend doing so soonest...their staffing process to get the national competition approved takes months, and I suspect the team will submit that request very soon if they haven't already.

Quick update: the training camp on May 6, the day before the Billygoat, will be open to everyone. The venues will be close to the BG site, with the afternoon training session likely at Mountain Lakes, only a couple of miles from Ward Pound Ridge.

As Geof mentioned, camping for the weekend will be available at WPR.

Hope to see everyone there.

UPDATE: All is on track for 2017 Billygoat on Sunday May 7th. Approvals have been granted and mapping of a beautiful section, not used in the US Champs is near completion. In addition to the Billygoat, there will be a Pygmy Goat option.

Camping is available in the park. Sites can fill up early for that time of year. Reservations should be made directly with the park. Phone number is 914-864-7317. Information and the fee schedule can be found at http://parks.westchestergov.com/ward-pound-ridge-r... They will only accept personal checks and those should be made out to "Westchester County Parks" and not to the park itself.

Mass start will likely be at 10:30 AM, just a bit earlier than traditional. The park charges a $10 per car entrance fee. This begins at 9:00 AM. Those wishing to avoid the fee may want to enter the park before 9:00.
