I also had problems with that taped area... the only thing that saved me from going around, was that I somehow remembered that this was a different colour of tape than they said they would use for out of bounds.

I agree that the fact that many routes crossed the river with the black line around it was an issue - I chose a route that crossed it, but then had some sort of mental battle where I almost switched to a different route partway and had to convince myself that it was ok to cross it (and that I would not be disqualified in the first part of the race).

Yeah, I hesitated quite long with the route using the road, and if I had to run this leg again I would not hesitate very long. Both to save energy for later on and study all the other routes.

Study the whole course during the road running between 1-2 was main thing what I was thinking when I first saw it on TV. Sitting on sofa it's easy to be clever.
