Very nice article. Orienteering well explained.
I'm not anywhere close to being their coach and it is not my place to say but if I were training teenage orienteers and any of them said they didn't like XC because it was too boring I'd say get over it. Use the XC training for how it can make you a fitter, faster, better orienteer. Even if you do not measure up to the school XC team, use their training sessions to help you get to the best level you can. (But don't get so good that your XC coach forbids you to do other sports for fear of injury).
