Pretty sure this happens alot among orienteerers. In this case, the elastic strap came off, and the gloves didn't convey the "feel" that something was amiss...

Thinking of attaching a bit of bright pink ribbon tape to objects such as SI card, compass, seeing glasses, so that they brightly show up in a background of muddy leaves.

I have sometimes put a leash on my compass (the one Gale sells for sticks), after walking away from a steep downhill, hopping a creek, seeing no compass, then scouring a leaf-strewn hill. Luckily that time it was on top of the leaves!

We need to get some leashes on our rental sticks stat....
