bill_l: "some guy just minding his business riding his bike home from work."

You're probably the only one to take that route on a bike.... ;)

chitownclark: Hence no one is expecting him...and he's by them before they can react.

Urban riding has its benefits, as long as you truly do mind your business. Few cars, spacious old streets, interesting sights.

Its when righteous gear-heads yell at the pimpmobiles, and knock on their hoods after being cut off, that dangerous trouble starts.

ebuckley: Yeah, nothing like picking a fight when you're outnumbered, outweighed, and outgunned.

Seriously, why would anybody want to mess with me? If they are so desparate that they want my pack (including the underwear and $10 contained within), they merely need to ask. As for the bike, it's worth a lot to me because it would cost $5K to replace, but even marketed well to racers, a 5-year-old machine that's been crashed would not likely fetch more than a few hundred dollars. At a pawn shop it will get you a suspicious look at best, more likely a call to the police.

bl: "So smooth even PG would like it. Plus, who's gonna mess with him? An old skinny white guy riding through the hood on a bike. Sure, he might be a wayward accountant completely out of his element, but he might be some crazy dude packing a 9mm."

I caught that Mr. Bigger-than-anyone-I've-ever-seen Buckley. Why must you be you a jerk? Because he might be one, too and you have to match up? He did put you in your place back then about 'bad pavement', didn't he? I occ followed you ever since you ignored my in-need query about mapping issues (recall you just blew your horn re team trials mapper/course setter a few yrs ago...so you might have been of help in my struggling) .

As a late comer, I've seen you blossom...into love of oneself! Somehow, I think 'original' orienteers -- vs bikers or adventure runners arriving in O - are different, maybe even nicer, perhaps more genuine people but what do I know compared to you.

For all your local noise in the world of O, have you ever gone overseas for orienteering? I don't think so. Well, here, for you especially...I sailed my 40' boat from New England to Newfoundland to Scotland (over Ireland) in '99, passed right thru the heart of Scotland, went to Inverness, attended Highland '99, the 'the old white guys' version of WOC '99 and returned via the Viking steppingstones (look it up for homework). And before that, I sailed around the world, 53,000 miles, with my wife - incl around South America & going to Greenland. And perhaps you can't even swim.

And for all of that, I cannot even bring myself to bragging about myself on AP or anywhere else in the world.. I tried once on AP & gave up. But I learned to dislike very much what people like you say. As I typed the above, my hand was trembling in anger about what you write at times. I often say to the perspectiveless: "if you are lucky, you'll get to be an old white guy, too."

See you in Europe? (first there in '78, not an old man then) or at the USOC - not sure I can make that, I'm too tired with all I have to do re the A meet last Sept weekend, work 5 days a week, getting the boat friend of 27 yrs home to driveway etc.

PG: I do believe that the act of passing out snide comments, which it is possible I may have done from time to time, also entitles one to be the recipient of such remarks.... :-)

expresso: bl, I'm appalled. I've never seen such a negative posting in a training log. As much as I disagree with your opinions, you may think what you want but please keep the AP training community free of this spite.

jtorranc: I'd let this die but I can't help thinking Bob's post sounds unhinged enough that someone ought to be asking whether he needs to be taking some medication more consistently. Or at all. Or receive the benefit of some sort of intervention. Is there anyone out there who can say from personal knowledge that Bob just has a bee in his bonnet about Eric and is otherwise on an even keel?
