hm, the air or the food (or maybe the roads?) must be really good in Spain...
yeah, that would be interesting research, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it with a bunch of liars, cheaters and idiots... Then again, 1800 could be possible with talent and without doping if we can do 1200 on a longer climb with only a small fraction of the kms these guys do.

eh, from 1200 to 1800 is an increase of 50%...In running, we do not loose 50% to the top guys, maybe 25%. So who makes the difference; the liars or us??

Don't forget that when running the body much more limits your performance. When cycling, it mainly depends on how much power you can produce in your legs.
Running does much more wear down your body as cycling. Even if you train hard, you can't increase your competition speed that much more.
Considering this, I think it explains why you can increase VAM by more than 25% with hard and continous training only. Maybe not 50% without cheating, I don't know...

hf; I fully agree with the first part of your statement, but think as the body does not limit performances as much as in running, one should get closer to the cycling worldclass performances as opposed to running. The difference might really be explained by cheating...
There are other interesting studies that calculate the max. possible human performances on a bike; the conclusion is that most of the delivered performances are simply superhuman... :)

maybe 1800 is too much, but I think that 1600-1700 is definitely possible in a cool and clean kind of way. I mean, if I can do almost 1300 with a few hrs/week on average, it should be possible to do 30% more with hard and specific training for someone who's talented like Ulle.

Ulle? Talented? He certainly has talents in money transfers...

Ulle was apparently the talent of the century. All people around him confirmed that.
