Yep I felt pretty bad, but what can you do. Hopefully he will heal and learn a hard lesson about trail crossing.

They are the bane of gardeners. They can wipe you out in short order.
Hmm, never thought of using my bike to get rid of them.............

We dont have groundhogs in our garden but the rabbits are persistent. we just use a lot of chicken wire, raised pots that they can't reach and expect some losses. Our groundhogs are down by the drainage channel but they always run away way before I get there, maybe this one was slow . Coach, what crops do yours go for?

Chipmunks, squirrels, groundhogs...all these varmints are a hazard to cyclists. One of my riding buddies was all alone on the North Branch bike trail through the dense forest preserves.

The trail was deserted, and he was really cranking....maybe 24-25mph? Suddenly a small chipmunk ran across the trail, directly into the front wheel. The chipmunk became entangled in the front spokes, and quickly rotated up to the brake blocks. This stopped the front wheel dead....launching my buddy over the handlebars, and through the air, rotating head downward, til his helmet hit the pavement, snapping his head back and causing a serious neck injury.

All because of a (now deceased) chipmunk.

Good thing he had a helmet on!
