For those who have been around the US orienteering community for a while, I wanted to pass on some sad news. Jerry Rice, formerly of NEOC and ROK, passed away today, 2 days after being involved in a serious car accident.
Jerry was quite active in orienteering in the '80s, mainly with NEOC. He was also president of ROK (Rice Orienteering Klubb), which had the inspirational motto of "Run Like a Rock."
Jerry was most recently living in Florida.
Sorry to hear. He was a great go-to guy at many of our events - and a fierce competitor. Was his line "run hard and stupid"?
Run Hard and Stupid it was. One of my first memories in orienteering was at (I think) the 1987 US Champs, when Jerry took a look at me, said "You look like a ROK", and tossed me a T-shirt (which I still have, I'll post a picture tonight.
Sad to hear indeed. Quite a character, but a fine fellow. Everybody should probably raise a glass of their favorite beverage in remembrance.
One of the original Marines, and one of the first M21 US champions, right?
Yes, US Champion in 1973.
Sad news. Thanks for letting us know.
Also here, this is sad news. I have some fond memories of Jerry and various hijinks I associate with him. He was always quick to come up and greet you with a smile and maybe a joke or a story.
Sad news. Jerry was a very good friend during his New England days. We saw a lot of him particularly in the early 90s when he was living in SE Mass and we were on the Vineyard. We visited him then almost every time we were going or coming, and he came to the Vineyard often. He visited us when we were in California, too, in '92-'93, went for a prodigious long run from our apartment in Thousand Oaks via trails to Cheseboro Canyon. Great runner, a lot of fun. Strange, but we were talking about him just on Sunday when we were driving back from the Vineyard, missing him and wondering what he was up to.
Sad to hear, Jerry was a good friend . We trained together in the early 90s, so we could show those young guys we could make the US Team, and he got me there (just,Cteam). But that was the years of KSwiss, so we got the swag!
He was just fun to be around.
I also remember a very competive relay team of 11 year olds, Samantha and his daughter Christina.
I will go find that ROK shirt.
Very fun guy as echoed by others. Sorry to hear.
