today was the turkey trot, and at the start, I was really hopeful as to how I would handle the 12km as I had arrogantly believed I could have done the 20km. However, when coming to the start line, all the 20k'ers were serious elites, such as yours truly Toby Wilson. I probably should have realised then, the gravity of this highly competitive, physically punishing race with its deceivingly sweet name: Turkey Trot. Alas, I did not.
I began strongly, with good route choice and ya know, feeling happy because it was a nice, sunny day and my friends were about, and yeah. I finished the first map (because you go through 4 maps, i don't expect you to know that zazi, its okay, you're a queenslander). ANYWAYS, I finished the first map and, by this time, I was a little winded, because there was this elite-looking guy in front and he kept stopping then sprinting and I was trying to keep up, because I believed in myself. So, like, I was winded and had ragrets for choosing the 12k'er, because I still had three maps to go.
Got to the map change, and had to sprint until out of sight because the guy at the map change knew my name and cheered me on and i was like oh dear I actually have to run now. So I sprinted the first bit of the 3rd map, and that felt like a mistake, because towards the end, this old lady was running next to me.
4th map, and I was greeted by 500 contours to the first control (of the 4th map) and I was like oh wow, oh dear. however, be proud of me zazi, because I kept running, like Forrest Gump, i just kept going and reached the top and was like wow, I am superwoman, i breATHE PAIN, I AM THE PAIN. i think i was kinda in the zone at that point bc i had overtaken the old lady. the rest was a home straight except for at one point where I almost ran past my control, but its all g, i turned back and got overtaken by like four people who laughed at me while i hid gentle tears. I managed the final sprint to the finish line and overtook this man who I was kinda running with at the end.
