I'm going to be visiting London for a few days. I thought it would be most excellent touristic activity to find a copy of a London City Race map and re-run it. Any suggestions? Will there be any permission / access issues or are the courses generally in public areas? Which year's course was best (i.e. most fun)? Any idea where I can find a map to download & print?

Good idea: Maps are on the SLOW routegadget.

I think most of it is public access, although London is always being redeveloped.
After 1000 years you might have thought they'd got it right by now :)
Most fun from an O-point of view is the Barbican (e.g 2014), and from a touristic viewpoint, courses which head down past St Pauls to the river (e.g. 2010).

What's your email - I can send you the one I planned (2012). You probably can't run round the first few controls (temple) as only open at certain times, but everything else is public access. The M21 / W21 are probably my favourite.

And I'm going to also be in London in late June. What a great idea! I was also thinking of showing up at this.

If you don't want to print and take with you, try speaking to Ollie - he's mapped a lot of it and planned a few races - he may well have spare maps lying around which you could pick up from him. (he very kindly gave me one when I visited)

I ran the 2011 race, course 1, which visited a lot of interesting parts of the city, including St Pauls. It was very busy though as I ran it on a weekday, it'll be much quieter on a Sunday if you can.

Watch out if you go to the barbican, it's tricky in there...

you should run the 2012 course too. I'm slightly biased though.

I regularly go to London for work and always make a point of having a run on the London map, either redoing an old course (which is sometimes difficult because in some years areas were opened up specially for the race - eg Law Courts area) or just going with the flow and doing a tourist run. Do it early in the morning and you avoid most of the traffic. It is a great map and always a blast!

I went to London (or more specifically Heathrow) by accident once when my flights got changed. I didn't have the motivation to run around the airport though.

there is a shopping mall mapped in london (and there's been a race in it), but don't think we've got as far as mapping heathrow yet. Last time I went home there was a race in the evening before my flight a few miles away, so I ran then checked in in running kit. I also missed out a control and was cross about it at least all the way to dubai.
