Does anyone know if a permanent orienteering course isn set up a Castlewood? When I was out riding today I came across what looks to be a permanent checkpoint. For clarification the Castlewood in Ballwin Missouri

It's not on the St Louis club's page, but perhaps they know about it. You could ask them....

Some Eagle Scout put up a perm course a few years back. I seem to recall the placements were, well let's be kind, not what orienteers would likely have chosen. At any rate, I never got the final map so they never made it to the club copy. The visitor's center may have more info.

Is this related to the Warm up for Tassie event, or just of topic

Sorry for the mis placement of my original post. Did it from my phone and we'll just screwed it up.

I googled "Castlewood orienteering Eagle Scout" and found a thread from 2006. I have not been able to find a map, but will check with the visitors center next time I'm there. May be a good course to teach my kids.

Thanks for the input.

I believe your original post mentioned the permanent course at Rockwoods Range too. I think this was set up very professionally by Al Smith around 1998. It has 17 Beginner controls with a White post control feature, and 17 Intermediate controls with a Brown post.

I have all the control locations and clues on an old Rockwoods map which I'd be happy to copy and mail to you.

That would be greatly appreciated. I will send you an email in a few.

SLOC offers the Rockwoods Permanent Course Map for sale on their web page. $3 for members, $5 for non-members.

Three of the perm controls at Rockwoods have gone missing. Two are advanced markers in the south of the park which you wouldn't likely hit, but one of them is in the set of 17 beginner/intermediate controls. I don't recall which.

There is also a perm course across the street in Greensfelder, but it is very old (from the late 70's, I believe) and many of the markers are either gone or rusted so badly you can't see them from more than a few feet away.

BTW, if you do locate a map of the Castlewood controls, let me know and we can add that to the website (though that Castlewood map is pretty rough; it was my first significant mapping project).
