Does anyone have copies of the maps for this year's team trials? Morehead Campus or Carter's Caves?

JanetT:
Carter Caves is brand new, so there's no map available.

JanetT:
The "creating the Carter Caves map" video is available on the OUSA site.

cedarcreek:
The Morehead campus map is also brand new, so there will be no map available.

JanetT and Cedarcreek are both correct. Both maps are brand new, so no previous oreinteering maps of either area are available. I'll be posting some little snips and general event information within the next few days and will link those here.

So I would really like it if at least aerial of the area could be shared/outlined. Even just for out of bounds purposes so one does not go for a morning jog the few days before in the area. I feel like to properly prepare for as important of a race as this I would like to know what KIND of techniques I need to be brushing up on. Also the video linked above does not actually have anything really useful for preparing to race except for a few seconds of footage of the park, However very informative on how a map is made.

What will be the temperature of water at aid stations, and what is its sodium content?

Seriously. Like. It is. The same. For everyone.

What I hope to communicate is that there are a myriad things the organizers should ensure in order for the competition to be fair and enjoyable. Every question in excess of what is common means that the organizers need to dedicate time to answering it instead of the core tasks. Yes certain things may be commonly asked in Europe (such as the temperature question above), but in here, where the operation is actively run by less than a hundred or so people nationwide, there is such a thing as asking too much.

I don't understand, can't you just google Carter Caves State Park? That will tell you a lot.

Also, old-time USGS quads. If one really wants to go to these extents, I bet the lidar data is public and you can make your own pullautin for your perusing pleasure, nothing prohibits that.

If there's an embargoed area, that information should be distributed.

Brushing up on orienteering techniques would be recommended.

Emargoed terrain:
1. all of Carter Caves State Park and all of Tygarts State Forest.
2. Morehead State University campus and all portions of Daniel Boone National Forest within 1600 meters of the campus.

Anywhere else in Daniel Boone NF, Cave Run Lake State Park, the city of Morehead, etc. is fair game. Within 24 hours I'll be linking a preliminary event information page which gives more details of places you can go in Carter Caves (lodge, cabin, campground, visitor center, underground cave tours) without violating the embargo.

There is no lidar for either Carter Caves or Morehead.

Carter Caves is in Carter County. Morehead is in Rowan County.

About two years ago, we asked them to try to add Carter County to the flight schedule, and they basically laughed at us. (Perhaps if we had asked in 2012, it would have been possible. Flights in 2013 and 2014 were on the other side of the state.)

Preliminary event information (and I stress preliminary), is posted. There are a couple little snippets of map on the "race details" page.

Thanks for posting that information Mike. Any idea of how much the cost would be to be in the lodge rooms?
Jan 14, 2015 1:38 PM #
mikeminium:
The lodge rooms are about $70 per might plus tax. I am trying to finalize a couple more details before I publish details and how to reserve them.

Wyatt, when I went to the reservations page to try to find the rates, it told me no rooms available for the dates of the Flying Pig. I figured they were holding them back, so no, the information is not available by googling.

jjcote:
Wyatt wasn't talking about room rates, he was referring to Boris's comment about how to get general park information.

General Park information.

mikeminium:
You will not be able to reserve rooms or cabins using the online reservation system because they are all blocked for our group. There are rooms available. I'll post how to get them real soon...
