I just looked at the map. Brutal course.
Only 98 starts. Poor weather? That's the 2nd lowest in a decade for Bog Slog, and the lowest was after some snow (2008). We had 130 last year and 169 three years ago.
Sigh indeed. Weather was decent enough, it wasn't raining and not particularly cold either, 45-50F.
Hard to say why. Lack of a mass start? I don't know if Lord Hill scares people away if they think they'll have to be all alone the whole course. Poor marketing? Seems like everyone should know about the Bog Slog by now. Who knows.
I didn't find the course too bad, definitely slower than last year's though.
It's hard to account for the mass start, because we only did that last year, and Kean was dead set against that this year.
Marketing was probably a lot of it, especially since registration for it didn't open until a few weeks ago. Also, it's closer to Christmas, so that may have an impact.
It'll be really weird if Shoreview sets another record next week. We'll have one of lowest Bog Slogs in a decade, surrounded by our best-ever December event and our best-ever ever event.
Also, I hope Jourdan doesn't think we're a bunch of idiots. He's been here for what, 5 events? And we've now had a misplaced control at one and a thrown-out competition at another.
Plus another misplaced control at the Dash Point meet. Hopefully he was duly impressed by our epic new sprint map.
I can definitely empathize with the feeling of being pissed off. Still, you had a good showing physically and for much of your race. I guess I'm reminded of these cliches, e.g. from Batman: we fall to learn to get up. We won't improve as orienteers except through overcoming challenges and confronting problems. If we were always perfect navigators, we would have nothing to improve.
I once asked one of my orienteering friends if he ever talked to himself during a course. He replied "only in expletives."
Is UW the best sprint venue mapped in the US?
Also: we need a better vetting process.
Kean sent an email to GVOC email list with no date or start time, nor really explaining where Lord Hill is...
At minimum, it's the best urban sprint venue I have raced on in the US.
